 Details
Merchiston Castle School has around 485 boys between the ages of 8 and 18, and is one of the UK's leading independent schools. There are currently 14 students from China at the school.

LOCATION:
Although proudly retaining links with its Scottish culture, Merchiston also remains an "English" school in many aspects, not least in the way in which Standard English is always the spoken and written medium. Founded in 1833, it is situated in beautiful and spacious grounds on the outskirts of Edinburgh, which provide a safe and secure environment for its pupils. Moreover Edinburgh, the world famous capital and cultural centre of Scotland, has its own international airport and his makes it easily accessible to overseas students.

ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Merchiston pupils are prepared for GCSE and A Level exams in a wide range of subjects, (including Chinese if desired). The teacher pupil ratio is 1:9. Exceptional academic achievement has become inextricably linked with the School. This was demonstrated yet again in 2010 when 80% of A Level papers taken were awarded A&B grades, resulting in 82% of boys gaining entry to their fist choice of university. At GCSE an impressive 84% of papers gained A*, A&B grades. Around 10% of students each year go on to Oxford or Cambridge University.

ALL-ROUND EDUCATION:
In keeping with all good schools, Merchiston embraces the concept of an all-round education. Choral singing, sport and technology are just three areas where high standards are achieved.

PASTORAL CARE:
The quality of pastoral care is highly regarded and our unique horizontal house system fosters friendshirp and security. The experienced house staff and tuturial teams ensure that each boy is given individual attention allowing him to reach his full potential. Our boarding accommodation is of a high standard, and for Sixth Form pupils, a new boarding house incorporating vast social spaces, kitchens, seminar rooms, a cafe and multi-gym, as well as 126 en-suite study bedrooms opened in January 2009.

VIEW FROM A PUPIL:
Qi Yang is now in his 3rd Year studying Natural Sciences at Trinity College Cambridge. Before he left Merchiston he wrote:

"I come from Maanshan City, Anhui Province, China. I came to Merchiston Castle School after I finished my Senior II course in China. Merchiston and Edinburgh City both have a beautiful natural enrironment and a graceful historical an cultural atmosphere. Traditions and manners play important roles in the school. The school has friendly teachers, efficient but also very enjoyable lessons, and a style of education which is just complementary to that of China. All of these make me enjoy the school very much. For me, Merchisotn is an ideal place to combine the advantages of eastern and western education that I have received and to prepare for the access to the World's top universities."
